Look on the bright side, Brian Williams — now you’re the front-runner for this spring’s Profiles in Courage award.
Is a boffo new Steve Spielberg biopic already in preproduction: “Saving Private Brian”? — to cite an Internet joke yesterday.
Perhaps now the walking male mannequin can return to his roots at MSNBC in triumph — Mike Barnicle and the Rev. Al Sharpton will welcome him back with open arms. Maybe the three amigos can helm their own MSNBC show, “Fake but Accurate.”
First guest: Dan Rather.
NBC. Never Been Credible. Nothing But Crap. Remember the doctored 911 Trayvon Martin tapes? And Dateline’s exploding truck? And now Conflategate, because all Williams did was “conflate” a few facts. Now he says whatever happened was a “bungled attempt,” sort of like John Kerry’s “botched joke.” Both involved Iraq.
Williams told his whopper to “honor” the military. It was a “mistake.” It’s always a mistake. To quote Bill Clinton: “Mistakes were made.”
Brian Williams won’t be fired, of course, and he’d never resign. He has no shame, and he doesn’t think he did anything wrong. He just flat-out stole some valor, but in the moonbat community, that puts you in very rarefied company indeed.
Starting with Hillary Clinton, who claimed she came “under sniper fire” in 1996 in Tuzla, Bosnia. Yes, this is the same Hillary Clinton who claimed she once went down to the military recruiting office to join the Marines.
Williams’ card-carrying fellow travelers at Faux (as opposed to Fox) News are already circling the wagons. All day yesterday the Globe website was running this headline: “Williams changes story about Iraq war incident.”
Changes story? House Speaker John Boehner and Harvard professor Ben Edelman could not be reached for comment.
It used to be a big deal to get on one of the nightly network newscasts. That was a long time ago, about 25 million viewers ago. But one day, I got a call from the Nothing But Crap Nightly News. Some legislation to gut the Second Amendment was coming up and they wanted some radio talk-show response. C’mon up, I told them.
Having once worked as a reporter for the local See B.S. affiliate, I figure I have a pretty good ear for TV sound bites. But I always try to give New York a good selection to choose from. So my first hour — to make their deadline — I talked to 25 callers, 23 of whom were opposed to gutting the Second Amendment.
At 6:30 there I was, in a Lisa Myers piece about the gun legislation. She said something like, even conservative talk-show callers back Big Brother’s common-sense approach to disarming the American public. And then they played three of my callers, two of the two who were for gun control, and one of the 23 who didn’t want to screw around with the Bill of Rights.
Was I surprised that Brian Williams of Nothing But Crap News has now been busted? No, but I was very, very happy.
