I have a transmission leak that can not be resolved by changing the gasket and pan (mine was slightly bent). The front seal and the rear main seal both look good and it my be the output shaft seal that is leaking. I am taking it to a transmission specialist on Tuesday and am topping it off with ATF. Does a 727 transmission need ATF or 90 weight gear lube? Maybe they are one in the same?
Thanks again for the help,
Mark

AFT and 90 weight are not even close to the same. You would destroy the valve body by using 90 weight. Make sure you don't use "F" type AFT either as it is for Ford only.

Check to see if it is leaking where the fill tube enters the trans case.

ATF only, 90W gear lube for manual transmissions and rear ends. ATF is a hydraulic fluid more like you would put in power steering pumps and floor jacks. Always, always use the proper fluid specifically designed for that type of device, don't mix.

ATF only for that 727... I once had a similar leak issue on a 727 and wound up being the dip stick o-ring. You might want to check for the leak there!!

It may also be leaking from the shifter seal...You,d have to pull the valvebody out to replace it...There is a heavy duty replacement seal that i would reccomend doing...I had the same problem...

I have been using Dextron III ATF and it is leaking from the front of the transmission as far as I can tell. It really starts to pour out if I get the RPM to 4000 or more which is not hard to do with the 4.10 in the rear. I will let the guy know about the shifter seal and the dipstick,
Thanks,
Mark

If you're taking it to a transmission shop, they probably already know about the various seals. Problem is will they charge you for a complete removal and seal job if it's just the shifter shaft seal? Does it leak when it's been parked for a few days?

Stay away from an auto trans shop unless you know for sure it needs a rebuild. For the most part they are the most unethical people in the auto repair business. They rely on the fact that very few people know anything about an auto trans and it ALWAYS needs an expensive rebuild.

I am sure that it is just a seal and does not need rebuilt. My brother in law owns a restaurant and this guy has been a Chrysler tech for 35 years looked at it confirmed it is just a leaking seal. I took it twice to the garage down the street and they can not find te leak. It leaks more when it warms up and slows once it is parked,
