i need to modify my fibreglass bonnet. i.e do some grafting and moulding.

my question is why do you put on or spray on your mould pieces to stop the fibreglass from sticking to it once it dries?

thanks in advance

Wherever you get your 'glass supplies should also have the mold release agents. PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) is a quick answer, and it's water soluble so cleans off easily. Probably the way to go for a one off. If you really treat your mold right though, it'll be highly polished and coated with a few layers of mold release wax, until it looks like glass. It should pop out no problem after the resin cures. Use this stuff:

Some people have even had success with hairspray, since it's a water soluble plastic. A couple of coats over the waxed surface helps with the release.

I'll admit that I haven't done regular fiber-glassing for a few years, so there may be some new info in the field. But I used to do a lot of it both at home and work. The principles should still be the same. :) Whatever method you use, lots of washing and scuffing will be needed to assure good paint adhesion.
