Any Ford guys out there, have a 66 Fairlane question

A buddy of mine (Ford guy) has asked me to go look at a 66 Fairlane 500 with him this weekend. I was curious if anyone knew what to look for "legally speaking" like with the Mopars you look at the trunk, core support, dash and fender tag but how about a Ford?????????????????

Pretty funny bigman.

There should be a door tag that lists the options and colors, however, it's often gone. 5th digit in VIN is engine and there will be a VIN stamp on the drivers side inner fender near where the fender bolts are. Fairlane 500 is a high trim level car and should be bench seat. If your buddy gets it I have a crap load of 66 - 67 Fairlane parts. Dash parts, switches, gauges, full set of tinted glass for a HT, etc....

Keep in mind this isn't for me however the Fairlane is my favorite non Mopar car by a mile "SWEET CARS".

Always thought Fairlane's were great cars. Ma had a '66 when I was a kid. My dad had that car tuned like a clock. 289 was pulling 20+ MPG HWY no problem and the car was very dependable. More dependable than dad's roadrunner, especially in the winter. Finally rusted away into nothing. Rotted real bad in the front frame near the firewall to pan transition. Miss that blue Ford. Lotta memories.

My step dad was into them, he had a 66 GTA 390 HT baby blue/with dark blue interior & 1 of my many bros. in laws, Steve had a 67 GTA 390 white convertible w-black top & interior IIRC, when he was dating my sister Candy, made me actually like the guy, I didn't really like many of any of my many sisters, many boyfriends... Cool old cars, for Fords

Well I'm not going to lie to you guys, if he ever sells it I'm getting first dibs. For me it's one of those cars that stops me dead in my tracks every time I see one, absolutely love the body style and over under headlights and they do resemble the 1968-1970 B Body style as well.

This also has the 289, looking forward to seeing it and hope it makes it into my hands haha. No, just kidding but I'm looking forward to helping him fix it up.

I hear ya...good looking cars. Dig the stacked headlights too! My old man's not a Ford guy, but he never had anything bad to say about that 289. Never left us stranded. Not a powerhouse, but dependable.

I was into Mustangs in the mid 70's and had two Fastbacks...a 66 and a 65 plus 3 coupes. The 65 was a beater but was straight but looked like hell but I beat really hard on it. The 66 was a nicer car but man, it broke all the time even tho it got 21 on the highway with a 2v 289 4 speed with a Torker intake, 600 Dp and headers but with a 2.80 gear. In town, the mpg sucked big time but it also pulled down 15 flat on the drag strip. Just got tired of fixing so much and went back to Mopars and never left again.

Having had a 66 fairlane and mopar and a Buick and a few others. There becomes very little difference other than interchangeably... the year is what's most important. I noticed year to year differences more than make model and trim. Depending on who cared for the car there habbits how they drive where they parked it how often it got service.

I had a 66 2dr HT w/a 200 ci 6 in it just after high school. My buddies called it the dragnet car. I forgot everything I learned about that car.

What I can say about the general bodystyle is learned from my 71 torino and exposure to mustangs-

The cowl vents are problematic (like a 71-74 B) and that in turn can cause floorboard and firewall rust not to mention the cowl/vent is real difficult to fix.

Might also be the cause of front frame horn rust.

It had one at one point and I was going to put it back on. My 76 Tahiti Tiger jet boat would look pretty good behind it. Let's hope I won't have to tow you, but I'm happy to (with the Ford) if you get stuck!
