So a couple weeks ago I sold my 69 RR and I am know looking for a new car. This one seems to check all the boxes for what I am looking for, but there seems to be a lot of BS claims by the dealer selling the car. I have traded quite a few e-mails with him and spoken on the phone with him a few times as well. It sounds like the dealer is now actually the owner of the car. Here is what he is telling me vs. what I have been able to verify.
1. His claim...car makes 730hp/980tq. He has, however, provided me with the dyno sheet from the engine builder (built in 2005). Dyno sheet shows 506hp/513tq. He also provided me a copy of a dyno sheet from a chasis dyno that was completed back in march. It shows 417hp/463tq.
2. His claim...the engine was built by Bill Hancock who was Richard Petty's crew chief at his shop in NC. Here is what I can find out about Bill Hancock....he worked for Chrysler developing race engines and had a shop called Arrow Racing Engines in Michigan. This part makes sense because the original dyno sheet for the motor is from Arrow Racing engines. I can find no info linking Bill Hancock to Richard Petty as a crew chief.
3. He included a photo of the fender tag. The fender tag on the car started with PX23. All I can find about a PX23 code on a fender tag is for a 68 Plymouth Fury. When I asked him, he was positive that was the correct tag, and that PX23 was just an option. I pressed him further on this and he conceded that the tag was just in a bag of stuff from the previous owner so he put it on the car....none of the other numbers on the fender tag matched the tag in the door jamb.
4. He claimed that the car went to Mecum in December and bids went to $58,000 but they did not sell it. What I can find is that the car did, in fact, go to Mecum in December, but according to Mecum's website, bidding stopped at $30,000.
5. He claims the car will run 10.36....for a 4speed car that only makes 417hp (4.10 gears) this seems a bit "optimistic" to me....or am I wrong about this (leaf spring car...no caltrak, or adjustable shocks)?
I made him an offer based on what a 65 coronet hemi clone car would go for and he told me that wasn't nearly enough since he is into the car for over $51K. The car is on the docket for mecum indy next month (if it happens). I will watch this closely to see how it bids. I just hope the bidders aren't taking the cars description as gospel as there seem to be a lot of discrepancies.
