Anyone replace their own garage door springs? Torsion type..

Fortunately torsions use a common shaft but still the door would work better with same size springs.
8 rounds is not much. Keep tirning until the door starts to lift off the floor and then back them off a
little. To much tension will make it hard to get down.

Neither the front or the back doors go up all the way so yes, both need more tension. I don't mind the rear door not being up all the way since the lower panel is at about a 45 degree angle so it catches some breeze which helps move some of the hot air from the attic. My attic is open and the door is easy to open unlike the front door. It opens further but it's hard to lift when it's down.....but it's not hard enough for me to pull a muscle or anything. The front door has a good screw drive opener but that was for the wife and not me. Think I'll give it to her when the divorce is final

When useing side cables make sure the safety lines threw the springs are in place.

The safety lines are a must. I have regular extension springs on my doors. They are single 7'h x 10'w doors. They last me about 5 years before they snap. The sound is like a gunshot. Without the safety cables, I def would have damage to a vehicle.

Today I decided to tighten my new springs a bit. Only needed to go 1/4 turn to make the door go up 'nearly' all the way but main thing is it's easy to open and goes up within 6" of the bottom of the header....and that's no big deal to me since I do not run anything tall out that door. Main reason I wanted to tighten it up a bit is because it was coming down TOO easy when I pulled it and well, after 30 years of it not doing that, I just couldn't get used to it doing that. Now, it acts just like it did before the old spring broke. Also decided to tighten up the front door too since it's a bit heavy on the open but man, those springs were already pretty tight. Y'all may recall me mentioning that those were replaced about a year ago or so by a 'pro' and he installed shorter springs than what came off of it. However, I did manage 1/4 turn on those too and it did make a difference in opening it and it does go all the way up which is much more important to me on that door but I'm a bit concerned how tight the springs are even though there are only 8 1/2 rounds on them....
