a, no, not an ad for bean-o...........
I think I pumped about 5 gal of "bad gas"
into my baby. she did not like it ...after about
40 min of driving, 80* F (open it up a few times)
& "why not", it was operating great!
then, ('63 big block) started
to "fall on it's face" at 3,000RPM...
gun it at idle &
it "back fire" BANG...(carb, I think)....
humm, went through the ignition,
quickly and visual checked plugs (looked good)
so,
cooled it down. put in 5 gal (elsewhere)plus additves,
(seafoam)..now it runs great! cooler temp, 65*F
.....so WTF? (sorry for that).

426, single 4 bbl- 600 avs, 4 speed, electronic ig'.
yada, yada, yada,...
any comments?

thanks,
Sonny Black

bad gas can cause that, but so can several other things.wait and see if the problem comes back.

how about sauerkraut and corned beef and a few guiness?

on the edge of a timing issue?

:thinker:the timing issue on that consumption would result in a backfire in 1 hour..:pottytrain2:

I knew I should not have asked....if anyone else experienced this
problem and pumped bad gas into a car
....and had a similar (in a general way)
reaction.....

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...i havent. bad gas is a thing of the past.......come to think of it.....i never got " bad gas" from anyplace.........except Joes Greasy Spoon....( sorry,,,,i hadda )

Yep, you have to be careful where you get your gas these days. You might want to stick a new fuel filter on er too Sonny.

Bad gas is what we've been burning for a lot of years now but sounds to me like maybe you had something get by the filter and made the float stick open? Did you replace an inline fuel filter lately before this happened. I did that once and a piece of rubber got pinched off the hose and it finally made it's way into the needle valve and held it open. It was fine on the road but as soon as I slowed down it would run crappy....and my wife will tell you I ALWAYS have bad gas! :D

1&1/2 years later it happened again! ( see 1st post) later while driving home, the motor performed normal and has ever since.....ignition? carb?:icon_cry:feedback please!

oh drears,
Sonny

Hello? :eusa_whistle:any thoughts?

if it is fine again i wouldnt worrie about it.could be anything from ign cotrol trying to go bad to sticking float to sticking choke.hard to say with it not being an ongoing problem.

been there............... its called water.....or worse... rusty water.

One time when this happened I ended up sucking 20 gallons out of my ol' GS. Pizzed me off I goota tell ya!

Just for fun check your gas filter. My hemi was crapping out not long ago and I went right for the filter. Well, the rear carb filter seemed like it weighed 10 lbs from all the crap in it. Before I got it this car sat more than got driven so might be some rust near the top of the tank finally shaking loose. As for bad gas I honestly don't think I ever had any out of a pump.

thanks guys, yea of course now it is running well.
it did pop out the rear once when "it happend" also out carb....
BTW I do have a new fuel filter in, I have a spare (new) i might try.
...tank was boiled out 4 years ago.
ignition??? hummm ...with out it happening how can I tell?
I am just going to drive it like I stole it........:eusa_liar:

Sonny

If the gas is getting there so are you, but popping occasionally. Throw a set of wires at it. I have cured odd misses and popping by doing just that..

Only sure way to tell if it is a "bad gas" problem is to drain the tank, replace the fuel filter, put fresh new fuel in the tank and see what happens........if the problem does not go away it is something else causing the problem but at that point you will know it is not the fuel.

PS: if it is "bad gas" you will have a sample to show someone...........

Intermittent problems are some of the worse there is to diagnose. On the plug wires I've found that even if you check the ohms on them, sometimes you can find a problem there and sometimes you won't but if they check out high, then you know to get rid of them. In the past, I ran solid core stainless steel and ran a carbon core coil and that took care of any static problems. On your fuel system, make sure your rubber hose sections are of the newer type made for use with the ethanol crap and try to verify that they are not from China. With the China crap, you have no idea what it's made with. If you're running a Mopar electronic ignition, swap out the ECU and see if the problem happens again. Same with the pickup coil in the distributor. Having a spare is always good. Check for loose wires at the coil and other connections etc. Put a wrench on all the grounds to make sure they are tight. Leave no stone unturned! Heck, open up the carb and see if there's any junk in the float bowl. If there's some in there, that will tell you what your filter is doing....

I have been driving it more often....NO PROBLEMS...last time it had the problem it was over 1& 1/2 years ago!!! now it runs like a champ!
I have "new" wires, fuel filter, ...think I am going to invest in a new gas tank this winter
also "pickup coil in the distributor" is a point well worth checking out..
Intermittent problems are a PITA!...that's why I am driving the $hit out of it...:steering:
Cranky,thank's for the input!
I'll keep you posted,
Sonny

BTW I had my carb rebuild last time it happened.......
the guy that di it swears by it & rechecked it out.....BUT
(I think my carb is a POS.)
might invest in a new edelbrock carburetor...
