I'm a bit fuzzy on this. Isn't the ball and trunion up front making the rear end yoke like normal cars have?

You're probably right, it makes sense. The car is in storage in another town
so it takes a while to go look at it. It's been 40 years since I did anything
with an early B-Body, one forgets. thx
The ball and trunion tranny's have a flange off the output shaft and the compensation for drive shaft length change (during suspension travel) is done in the joint assembly. Yes, the yoke on the 3rd member is a "normal" yoke and probably the smaller 7260 type.
