Epoxy prime all your bare metal. After that you switch over to a high build primer to start blocking. If you had alot of filler work, I suggest using a polyester primer (will need a gun with a 2.0-2.2 tip, thick stuff), or you can just go straight to a 2k Urethane primer.
Wash the bare metal with good degreaser that leaves no residue then you might want to consider treating it with phosphoric acid, which removes the flash rust you will get after you wash the car and also promotes paint adhesion. Etch primer does that in one shot but a two part process may better. The factory used zinc chromate (green color), which was for corrosion resistance but I doubt you can get that these days. I'm going to look into these options when I start my 68RR.
