Sounds like an amplifier. If separate amp make sure it is switched . Steady power one lead and ignition on other
Look at all you smart people! Many of you nailed it. A kid down the street works for a local car stereo installer. He is generally a Plug N Play tuner car type guy but enjoys a challenge/chance to use his community college electronics training. Today he traced the system and started checking grounds, resistance and continuity. 15 mins in he found the problem and 30 or 40 mins after that he had it fixed. It was an old stand-alone amp with a direct power feed. The owner's brother just wired it incorrectly. All it cost me was a couple tickets to the new Mission Impossible film and a large popcorn & drink combo - all purchased online & waiting for him & his GF when they showed up at the theater. And when did movie drinks go up to $10? Yikes! Anyway, thanks to all who responded and those of you who saw the big picture question and answered accordingly.
