Am I the only guy that would just give a friend the rear end? I dunno, funny kind of friendship. I would just give it to my friend, he would do the same. If not, they aren’t friends and a deal is a deal.

He has helped you out in the past. That's good, but you didn't say he was a good friend. How long have you been friends? Friendship is give and take and any "differences" are offset by camaraderie. Can you depend on each other in the future?

Discuss it with him and go from there.

That guy doesn't sound like much of a "friend" to me. If a friend of mine sold me an axle assembly at a discount and I found that something was wrong when I opened it, I would have said oh well, he was a friend doing me a favor. In the grand scheme of things, $500 isn't that much and I would never risk a friendship over something like that. I wouldn't ask for a bigger discount especially knowing I am buying a used car as is. Even with the issue, the price still seems fair to me.

I know I don't know the full situation and I am making an assumption but it honestly sound like your friend who "normally" picks them up for $500 is a part flipper and didn't really need it for himself. I would say full refund or nothing but none of this I want some extra cash from you to pay and fix my differential so I can make more money on it when I sell. I sure don't want friends like that.

Hey guys kinda trying to figure out what to do about this guy!
I sold a used 8 3/4 sure grip 3.55 gears 489 case! So was going to list it at $800 but I Know the guy and he said $500 is what he normally pays I felt it was a bit low but ok .
He got it apart and says the spider is jacked up and now wants $200 back .
He was there as I cut it out of the car and I told him the thing looked like it was road hard .
What should I do ?

I always thought that friendship was a relationship, not a dollar negotiation. If you can't come to a mutually agreeable understanding, then there was never a friendship, just an acquaintance . Unfortunately and it is a very old proverb " never do business with friends" business is business.

this is very simple. you guys struck a deal for 500. if he is not satisfied with what he has, reverse the deal and call it a day. tell him you will fix it and resell it to him for the original 500 plus the cost of fixing it. if he gets an attitude about that tell him to kick rocks

Friendship is friendship, but this is business; he is trying to hose you. Go and buy a 489 case with 3.55 gear set for $500.. I have bought a lot of things from "friends" as I suspect most have, it took the risk in the beginning because he thought he was getting a deal, now he decides he isn't and wants a refund... I am sorry but I wouldn't. Now, if you told him they were pristine and he found out different, then thats a different deal.

Personally if I bought something from a friend like that I would never ask for money back especially if he didn’t know about the damage and cut me a deal.

Tell him to show you what's wrong with the rear. You shouldn't go on his word alone. I had a friend once. I gave him some super rare mag wheels for an F100. Swore he wanted them for himself. Next thing I know, he had them on Craigslist. You are being played, and you know it. It's up to you on how you want this to go. It's a deal, or not a deal. No half back crap.

My gut says "he's not your friend"...... I just can't imagine a friend asking for a few bucks back to sweeten the deal back into his favor. Only a&&holes do that, IMO. I'd say, full refund, and all parts back, or pound salt. You didn't build the dang thing, and it's 50 years old. Just my two cents.
