carburetor fire and pop issues

It ran before you changed the wires. Double/triple check the firing order. Counter clockwise on the dist order.

Also If it has been parked awhile and using ethanol,you might want to see if its turned to mostly water,as said its only good for about a month. PS The Champion plug you are displaying doesn't look bad,don't forget that's what brand came in the car when new.

here are the results of finding the compression stroke on #1 TDC
this is what shows once the tdc compression stroke stops
i have not moved the crank afterward
now im confused.

Should i put the timing mark on 0
then look at the rotor position?

again all i have done is get the compression stroke on #1 >
open the distributor cap to see the position between 5 and 6 >
then look where the timing mark is.

As long as the rotor is pointing to 1 plug wire on the cap and the firing order is correct and the correct order.

Looks like your at 5 degrees after TDC, Honestly, close enough for getting it running....

Okay, I took a second look, Pull the distributor & rotate the rotor 180 degrees & drop the distributor back in....

If it were pointing anywhere else the procedure is...

Pull the distributor & adjust the gear so it looks like the picture... To adjust grab a big flat blade screwdriver & twist, the gear will climb up & over the cam gear, allow it to drop back into mesh with the cam gear a few times till you get it where it belongs... Now when you put the distributor in the rotor should point towards #1...

BTW usually it drops fully back in but it's possible for the drive gear to hang up an not drop into the oil pump... It it doesn't drop down you'll notice the gear doesn't twist back as far... Just play with it, it'll drop in...



Basically what happened is someone stabbed the gear wrong & rather than correct it they moved the plug wires around to match the distributor.... You put the wires back where they belong... So you either make the correction to the distributor gear so it's normal... Or you do what was done to you.. A patch that causes trouble later...

It looks like just the distributor... When I first looks I thought it was the gear.. And it could still be, pictures vs seeing it in person... When you pull the distributor look at the gear if the slot basically is aligned around 9-9:30 and 3-3:30 just rotate the distributor...

I cleaned all the plugs >

Made sure wires were on all the way >

Turned the rotor on the distributor 180 as 1 wild rt suggested >

Pumped the gas twice and she fired right up.

I wish when i was learning to work on cars with my dad i would have learned

I can totally relate... Dad liked cars, had a few cool cars but he wasn't really a mechanic.. He'd get in there & fix stuff but he was better at construction than cars.... I on the other hand was doing mechanical stuff before I was a teen...

Good to hear it's up & running again... Time to take her out for a cruise...

Car has been sitting a while due to having an intermittent start issue
i fixed that and one thing led to another cleaned up a few other things
lost order of plug wires
so i added new cap and rotor and wires
wired them up correctly according to some diagrams
now i get these pops and fires in the carburetor
is there a flow chart with values i can trace my issue with
or what suggestions does anyone have to try?
i have not messed with the timing , just the plugs and wired and added newer ballast resistor
fixed some broken and shorted wires in the ignition system.
any ideas?

1969 Dodge Charger 383
old style ignition system.

You know 383 fireing order counter (clock wise) right ,just sayen. Were the old plugs black and sooty (fine black powder on plugs)if so its to rich, i had the choke closed to much cold start and blew the choke plate of the carb holly 4 bbl. Re adjusted float to proper level adjusted timing readjusted air fuel mix no more pop or fire.hope this helps.

Yeah she is running pretty good now,
i was able to go around the neighborhood a bit on the pumped up old tires so that was great.
i did notice when turning the blinkers on the top part of the steering column spins a bit though did i not tighten something up correctly in the top pf the column maybe?

i did have it out replaced the bearings and steering shaft and floor seals.

im going to have to pull the wheel, open it up and look again.
just trying to figure out what part to look at.

What could it be i didn't tighten up enough?
