I got this carb off if eBay years ago knowing I would be rebuilding it. It looked like it was never taken apart, but now I'm not so sure.

3 questions:

1 - There was no spring behind the fuel strainer behind the inlet fitting. Normal, or did they all have one?

2 - There is a slot for a baffle in each bowl, but only the side nearest the inlet (passenger) had a baffle. I couldn't see any witness marks where a baffle might have been on the driver side. Should both sides have one?

3 - The secondary jets are the same size as the factory (.095"). The primaries are also .095", but are the short jet with 2 step rods. I was under the impression that this carb would have had the tall jets with 3 step rods. It's still has the dimpled piston/rod covers and not the flat ones. Thoughts?

Thanks guys!

I have a few, I’ll look

Should have a baffle in both float bowls

.101 Tall Primary Jets for three step metering rods

1. I cannot say the spring behind the strainer is all that common. I've only seen one once or twice in 30 assorted AVS rebuilds.
2. yes, both sides normally have the slid in baffle. but some don't have any.
3. according to my data, the 4640 primary jets are .101, and the three stage metering rods measure 0.065 x 0.062 x 0.053

Yep, those are the specs my 69 service manual give. I see some NOS tall jets out there that size, but haven't found any 3 step metering rods yet. You guys think someone switched jets and rods and just forgot or didn't know to swap the cover?

The engine is pretty stock except for Stealth Heads and a Mr. Six Pack cam. I'll have to figure out a good starting point.

Should I find a baffle? Are these carbs prone to fuel sloshing around and having fuel starvation issues?

Good to know about the filter spring.

Thanks!

I don't recall a "square jetted" AVS.
Thanks guys!

I ran a 4640 on my 383/432 Stroker for awhile with Edelbrock Heads and Intake

Unless it’s OEM Gold standard points your looking for , I wouldn’t waste time trying to find Tall primary jets and three step metering rods

You can fill in the factory metering rod covers with JB Weld and smooth them out or make your own flat metering rod covers out of aluminum

Does it have the hot idle compensator - I just replaced the factory gasket with one I made without the hole in the middle of the gasket and reinstalled the compensator

.101 Edelbrock Primary Jets - 65 / 52 Metering rods I started with

Pink Edelbrock Metering Rod Springs

.104 Edelbrock Secondary Jets

Drilled out the idle tubes to .037

Red accelerator pump

Carb was flawless , perfect , right up until I sold it to friend LOL

Honestly wish I still had it

Plugs with that same carb 383/432
