Installed a fresh 8 and 3/4 center that leaked some gear lube from the pinion seal after refilling. Complete professional rebuild including new pinion seal. Could this be caused by overfilling axle?

Maybe, probably not. Is the vent clear?

If it's a leather seal it might go away on it's own after it heats up and runs a bit.
Just trying to be optimistic.
You could try taking out the fill plug and see how much if any runs out.

The 8 3/4" axle has that vent that should allow for expansion as the lube warms up and gets sloshed around.
If the axle lube was added with the axle in the car, it isn't easy to overfill it....The lube gets to the fill hole and wants to spill out as you're adding it.

Yes ^^^^ a 741 and 489 use a different seal than the 742

Is it leaking from the actual seal or between the yoke and pinion shaft?
I have seen this. Fluid crawls up the splines and exits behind the nut and washer or nut threads.
Little silicone on splines and threads will stop this.
I prefer a leather seal over the rubber ones. These are just thoughts.

Permatex makes a RTV sealer for gear oil. I always smear some of that on the splines before slipping on the yoke.
