I bought these head gaskets. Cometic C5462-030
I think they are the same both sides, but with some head gaskets, there is a side that needs to be against the block. Is that true of Cometic?
I called Cometic. The tech rep said they are reversable right and left, but he didn't sound confident and that's not what I asked. Getting a 2nd opinion. Thanks

He probably didn't sound confident, because he'd never heard that question about a BBM before. There is no wrong way to install them. Up/ down, left right.
Maybe you're thinking of a sbf.

I usually install them with rivet heads up. Double check. Sometimes the head or block
need clearance for the rivets.

With Felpro Gaskets, I have always installed them with the metal ring for the cylinder facing down and the printed side facing up.
However, I admit that I probably rebuild an engine once every 5 years. I may be misremembering.
The gaskets cost $239 and I don't want to screw them up.

Cometic head gasket fits on dowel pins. Gasket has 3 separate sheet metal panels that are held together with rivets. It is reversible so does not matter which side is up. 3 rivets are outside head deck. No need to clearance head. Embossment does not interfere with cooling ports or go outside of deck

The Cometics have a pressed bead, like the original factory shim gaskets. I believe the bead should face the head because the head is more likely to warp & bead-up is more likely to retain the seal.

Since the gaskets are made in 3 panels, and are reversible, could the beads face outward from the gasket on both sides of the gasket?

Exactly. Some people want to be experts on everything. " the bead is designed so when the head is likely to warp it still seals" dafuq does that even mean.

What it means, brain surgeon, is that there is some 'spring-iness' in the bead & it will move to seal slight amounts of distortion. Exactly why Chrys used a bead-type gasket.
