Cylinder condition

So, finally got to honing a cylinder on this 440 block to examine condition through all the surface rust. Can't get some of this rust, and looks as if there's a very noticeable ridge a little down a 1/4 inch from the deck. Assuming this needs to go to machine shop? Mostly worries about rings not seating, but if they will I'll send it.

What is the bore size now? Needs to be bored. You will need to get pistons so they can fit them.

What is the hone, a stone type?
 
That ridge also wore a little off the old top ring. Ok when they were matched parts.
If you put new rings in it the new top ring will smash in to the ridge and it will be smoking in 1000 miles..
 
Your bores look like mine. Need to be punched to the next size depending on where they clean up.
 
Machine shops will generally measure and tell you what oversize you need or they supply for not much extra money.
To me I would say 20 or maybe more likely 30 oversize to get it cleaned up.
I have used the KB brand a few times with good results.
 
The bore taper needs to be measured and depending upon your budget and the amount of taper, a ridge reamer could be used to get the pistons out and perhaps it will clean up so the original pistons can be reused. This will be a compromised repair but it will get you back on the road for less money. It can always be bored at a later date to provide a long lasting engine.

Uhhh... The pistons are already out. Why would anyone go through all that to do again at a later date ?

Small budget maybe.
That being said that looks like a lot of ring ridge. If you had a dark shadow maybe. But you still got rust there. I think a bore might be necessary.

Will do, I think i damn near killed that one, it started to chatter the walls. Will get a coarse grit and start going at it. Would i be able to hone out the ridge with a coarse grit, finish it then mic it and check? Its up to 10 over i can send it with the pistons right? At least that's what the much maligned tony said.....

Dingleberry or 3 stone for this type job?

Pistons are out, its a bare block. This is by far a low budget slap it together and see what it does build, I know it will bite me in the *** but it is what it is
If it NEEDS it though and there's no other option I guess it has to go to the machine shop
