They've had that law for a long time for houses,
more so for commercial business
& depending on how far from a firehouse or fire hydrant where you live
& how big the house is
it's been there for the past 20+ years, depending on what county
some just if it was over like over 5k sq ft {IIRC, don't quote me}
it was required already
it's not new, it's been changed possibly

seems like income generation for contractors
& more permit fees for said contractors
lobbyist fleecing the politicians, promoting fire protection & sprinkler sales
crazy stimulus crap, govt. overreach

My dads house that was built in San Luis Obispo county had to have them. I like the idea, could save your house/belongings from becoming total ash.
Not sure it’s be around for 20 years for homes, but commercial yes, been required for quite sometime.
