I'm taking apart my dash to sandblast then repaint. But I'm having trouble removing the lights and wipers knobs and the chrome trim of the stereo. Anybody knows how?

It's from a 66 satellite hardtop.

Also anybody know any good chrome pen touch ups? That actually is chrome paint and not gray!

Thanks

Push release button on light switch and pull shaft from switch. Then you can use a wide blade flat head screw driver to remove light switch stud. Wiper switch knob should have an allen screw holding it to shaft I believe.

You should be able to remove instrument cluster as a unit and remove switches form assembly when removed
.

Thank you sooo much! Finally! Got light switch out but still having trouble with wiper. Any idea on the stereo trim?

Most of those bezel knobs and such require a special tool that engage the notches. I make my own as I need them but I also have machine tools. There is a MoPar resto parts supplier out of AZ I think that sells some of those tools.

If you have the factory am radio the knobs should pull off the shafts. The benzle is held in place by nuts behind the knobs. If I can find it will take a look at my 66 Belvedere dash to cheek wiper switch removal.

Cool thank you, will try romoving nuts today after work. Another question though. What about the that piece behind the knob? How can I remove that so I can get to the nuts? Cool thank you let me know.

I wanted to put up a quick before picture from the other night and show how the process is going. Still need to remove the stereo and lighter and ignition, which I have no idea on how to.

The bass, treible and fader controls behind tuner and volume knobs will also pull off of radios shafts. Will try to look at wiper knob tomorrow.

Ok everything's out, just need to remove wiper switch and knob and the ignition switch, which I'm having trouble with both. Help!!

This is how's it coming, still not done. Never did remove ignition switch. But as soon as I'm able to, I'll be sanding again and repaint. What yall think? image.jpg

Can not locate my cluster but pretty cure wiper switch knob pulls off. Ignition switch can be removed using two flat blade screw drivers will have to fit in slot in outer ring notch one each side and a lever between the two turn counter clockwise to remove. You should be able to turn it by hand once broke loose. There is a special socket for this but have never seen it.

Good questions!

I'll be pulling my dash out in a few days too so that I can restore it and I was going to ask these very same questions. Thanks everyone for making this site do exactly what it's supposed to do. Help each other.

Just did it and it worked. Finally, after I painted it lol. Going to repaint anyways. Also was able to pull off the wiper knob. I was scared I'd Brake something, that's why I never tried pulling too hard. But did this time and it came off. Now I can take apart cluster and clean and paint.

The lighter has a screw on piece on the back that holds it in place. If you rotate the ignition switch from the back of the dash, it should loosen it from the screw on front piece. This is the way I tightened and loosened mine. You can generally loosen the slotted radio nuts with a small screwdriver that will fit in one of the two slots. All you have to do is get it to break loose a bit and they should come off with your fingers. Just be sure not to scratch anything around it in the process.

I had my dash, ashtray and glove box parts blasted and powder coated for about $80 and it came out great. You need to take that chrome off too!

I have found no paint that really looks like chrome. I bought dash bezel and glove box repops. Some of the chrome used for models can be bought in sheets with a sticky back and looks great, but it is a lot of time and trial and error with an x-acto knife. You can also buy new metal knob centers, but a set for all dash and radio knobs plus the flasher is about $70.

If I remember correctly, the lens is kind of melted onto the dash cluster at a few points, but will pop off. These can generally be repolished if they are not broken or badly scratched and repops are available of the lens also.
