I have a 1969 Dodge Charger. Thinking about taking the dashboard apart and cleaning it out and re-dying it. Was curious, if I had to take the windshield out ? 1st time taking apart a mopar.

there is also a bolt on each side by the kick panel that you have to take off as well as dropping your steering column to slide your dash out.

66-67 has a metal dash and a dash pad attached to that.
I can remove my dash pad by removeing the cluster and glove box then take the nuts off the pad but if I want to remove the dash I need to drop the steering column and remove the windshield.

    69 Charger Dash Help

thanks guys for all your help. I am not sure which direction, I want to persue at the moment. I am trying to restore the interior. The interior is not that bad, but I have all the front and rear door panels that need to be re-upholstered. Then the dash is in pretty good shape, except for the drivers side and passenger side a/c / heater vents, they have rust of the edges. But what bothered me the most was a little hole under the glove box, right under the glove box door, below the metal dash board frame was a little hole. I just tapped it lightly and made this nice hole. I am a little upset with this.

So, I wanted to repair it, but I wasn't up to the task of removing the dashboard and windshield. Could I repair this with still having the dash board, still in place ?

I would hate to have to make all this work. I would love to remove it all, but I just think it would be a large mess. Anyone have any good advice ? I have the whole interior bare except the dash board. I guess since I have the car apart so far, might as well huh ? I just wouldn't know where what goes where, harness wise. I will post pictures late tonight into tomorrow to show what I am up against. If anyone can throw in there 2 cents, I would gladly appreciate it.

If the rest of the interior is out already, I would think that you could spot media blast the rusty areas and weld in any small patches without removing the entire dash frame. Get the hose out and have your way with it all over the windshield and see if you have any leaks, if you do than I would pull the windshield anyway just to reinstall it in an effort to get rid of the leaks. If it is not leaking, i would try to avoid removing it.

    69 charger dash help

Thanks. I have not driven the car in or exposed the car to rain since I have owned it for 10 years now, so I believe that the rust was probably due to whoever owned it before. I will try and check for leaks, thanks for the advice. What do I need to spot media blast ? I was thinking about trying to sand it down by hand and rust converting it, and adding some bondo to it, sanding it down again and paint it. ? I am all new to this.

It's not as hard as to remove as it appears. and if your going to paing and redo the dash, it a lot easier to remove the whole frame to work on it.

    here is my .02
take it out and do it right
I would never spot weld anything in dash while in the car for fear of causing a fire.
second if there is rust on A/c vents and the hole water has gotten in somewhere which means the heater box insulation must be moldy
pull the window you'll probably find the lip where the windshield sits is rotted.
strip the dash have it media blasted,
while the dash is out go through the heater box clean it change out the insulation there too.
check out the pics in rag top resto thread especially posts 2 and 8

I know it seems like a huge project and it probably will be but I think worth the effort
I learned the hard way do it once the right way
    best of luck

Take it out. It's not as bad as it looks. You will be glad you did it right.

Make sure you zip lock bag and mark the bag with what screw and bolt goes where. I'm attempting to reassemble my dash and its easy to forget what goes where sometimes.

I am trying to take the dash apart on my 69 Charger. Will I have to take the heater core apart also ? I also was trying to get the thumb wheel radio out, but I guess I can't take that out until the whole dash is apart ? This is one long project. Also how does the vinal dashboard pad come off ? I was trying to remove it, but I have no clue how to get it off ? Upper Vinyl Pad top of the dashboard.

    Dash pad removal

You have to remove the entire dash assembly to get at the backside to remove the nuts in the crevis of the dash. I am not aware of any tricks to do it any other way. Its a pain in the arse. They weren't thinking of us in the late 60's.
