DeltaV's '70 Charger 500; The Omen

Lower rear quarters...not bad for an unrestored 49 year old Charger?

I have never liked free advertising for car dealerships, but I suppose this will stay in place (for now) since is part of the car's "identity" one might say.

Top side of my tank. Will be replacing because it developed a pin-hole leak on the flip side...in 1987.

Unpacking boxes of parts and rearranging the garage for more space. Maybe I'll clay bar and wax it soon. I did locate the wheel trim rings.

Great car! What's the plan for restoration?

Great car! What's the plan for restoration?

Today I located the last boxes of parts that I removed from the car a long time ago. One of those boxes contained the the engine bay wiring. The superficial condition of the insulation looked ok, but I did note some (green) corrosion on one connector and wire strands. That got me to thinking...nearly 50 year old wiring throughout the car. I hate intermittent electrical issues. Then, I remembered an FBBO thread saying that full current goes through the ammeter. I hate fires more!

I don't like "scope creep" in any project because it runs up the costs, but I can't stand the thought of a fire. So, here goes with the highlights:
1) I'll install new wiring throughout the car.
2) I'll hand off the dash to some company to rewire and checkout/fix any gauges that need attention. Cosmetically, the dash pad, gauges, etc. look nice.
3) I'll reupholster the seats and install the carpet myself. Ditto the headliner.
4) I am torn on what to do with the exterior lighting. I prefer to keep it as is, but I have seen some modern lighting that I like. I have seen others that I don't like (they weren't bright when looking at them from an angle).
5) The drum brakes are the 11" monsters. I'll probably keep them, but could be persuaded otherwise. No matter, I do all brake work myself.
6) The 383 needs rebuilding. I'll probably keep it mostly stock (maybe run headers). It had a jumped timing chain when I bought it from the second owner. I disassembled it and then life took over. What I need is a reputable shop/engine builder. $10k budget enough?
7) I'll put in a new clutch and pressure plate. I'll have someone inspect the trans or maybe do it myself.
8) I am tempted to go with larger wheels and tires along with 3.55 gears and a limited slip rear.
9) Paint and body last. The car has a lot of door dings and there are several rusty places at the base of the rear window. Fortunately, the car has always been indoors since I purchased it in 1985. Maybe I will do the paint and body myself.

Sweet Car! Really really nice shape. Way better than mine and I thought I had Really really nice car. Just really now after seeing yours. Mines a 23000 miler from Leavenworth Ks. My trunk floor needed replacement. Some would of patched it but I replaced the whole thing.
It all takes time and money. I bought mine back in the fall of 2003 I think. lol
Still not finished. Hopefully this summer she will be home from the paint shop.
Looking forward to seeing your project come to life!

@dickdale asked for pictures of the hood latch and lever. Here they are:

Clarification is in order. Owner #1 added an alarm system for the hood. There is a dagger mounted to the underside of the hood and the switch was mounted to the underside of the hood latch plate (whatever it's called).

I haven't removed the dagger yet because it isn't "cooperating".

IMG_20190821_192022.jpg

The dagger passed through the center hole and the two satellite holes were for screws that secured the switch.

All of these holes added for the alarm system will be filled in at some point in the future. There are bigger fish to fry in the meantime.

What a great car! Thank you for posting pictures. I look forward to watching this car come back to life.

I am really surprised at how well these tail pipe hangers have survived so many years. Yeah, the tail pipes were the turn-down type...no extensions.

The car has the A01 Light Group for Chargers. Here's the trunk light switch and bulb & socket:

Here is one of the two brackets that the spare tire rest on. @Kern Dog has a thread on these brackets.

I was wrong earlier about "the last boxes of parts". I found more today...oil pump, pickup, Direct Connection double roller timing chain set, starter, etc., etc.
