Hey fellows, I’m new to the mopar world! Have been trying to trade a friend out of a 69 charger for years and have finally made a deal. I haven’t got it home yet. Aired up the tires today and will hopefully get it home this week. The last time we fooled with the car (6 years ago) both doors opened fine. It hasn’t been touched since, but today I could not get the drivers side door open. I’ve tried inside and outside handles, they don’t act like anything is unhooked. I didn’t have a lot of time to mess with it, but looks like it would hard if not impossible to get door panel off without tearing it up. Any advise, tips or tricks? I’m just a ignorant Chevrolet guy! Lol Sorry for the long post.

If you've literally not tried to open the door in six years, I'd try and shoot some penetrating oil from the inside or outside both right where the latch mechanism catches halfway up the door jamb... I have seen mopars where you had to give a little extra push in on the outside thumb button and the door at the same time because of a wear issue, but the inside latch remained unaffected, so I don't think that's the case for you. HTH, Lefty71 Oh, and welcome to the group, now lets see some pix.

Likely just stuck from sitting, force it open then lube all the moving parts. Or just leave it, mopars aren't required to have doors that open anyway...

Remove the armrest, and window crank, and you should be able to pull off the door card. That'll allow you to spray inside of door latch, and directly work the latch.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately I don’t have any pics yet. Beanhead that was my first thought but getting to fat for that lol. The car sat under a carport untouched from 92 til around 2012. Has been sitting outside since then. Green/green 383 auto

Door is unlocked. I tried locking then unlocking with key and inside lock with no change

You know, I can't see it being the linkage/mechanism coming apart from just sitting but it's possible a clip or pin got rusty or weak, and then broke the first time you tried the handle or button...I would pop that door panel off(carefully!) and check it out at this point

When you depress the button push in on the door. They lock with a star mechanism which may be rusted or gunny enough not to allow it to rotate off the sear.

You have to understand how the latch works. When you move either handle it moves a lever in the latch. This lever does not open the latch. This lever blocks a second lever which keeps the door latched. A spring moves the 2nd lever after you move the 1st lever with the handle. If the piviot for the 2nd lever is rusted, the spring won't have enough force to move it. Penetrating oil and some hammer taps against the mechanism while holding the handle in the open position will usually do it. If not hold lever #1 in the open position and get a hook tool to move lever #2.
