Driveshaft with massive flange at yoke/trans end?

I'm pretty sure its there to reduce noises the driveshaft makes whilst spinning. There's more than you'd ever want to know about it on Google Patents;

Funny thing is Chrysler was using it in the sixties & Ford patented it in 2004... So much for their "Better Idea" More like "That's as great Idea Chrysler had"....
