Earthquake this morning, in WNY

I must be remembering the one 30 years ago they mentioned. Was at my land in Bolivar NY for that one and it was about a 3.0 I think. 4.2 is enough to get your attention.

Really glad no one was hurt and hopefully no damage. As you know that’s an oft occurrence for us. Thx for taking some of pressure off….Lol

Not meaning to be a jerk but 4.3 ain't enough to spill your drink...

Be thankful you don't live in Turkey... They've had a 7.8 & a 7.3 both in the past 24 hours.... And trust me, their construction techniques don't qualify as "Earthquake Proof"...

Sad to see that on the news this am as over 2300 presumed dead at this point..

Hmmm...I was awake, but didn't feel anything. I must be too far away.

Hope it swallowed up the 'wicked witch' of a Govn.
you have

glad to see no real damage or harm

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

we had a 7.2 something on the Richter scale a while back up here
IIRC in last summer-ish
up in the granite & high lakes upcountry, 20 miles upcountry
we felt it for damn sure
rock & rolled the house, made me go outside & look

I won't even get up for a 4.2 here

the one mentioned was up by Dardenell resv.
Sonora Dardanelle Reservoir.jpg

Woke up a few yote's, raccoons, geese, ducks, hawks,
moutain lions, owls, squirrels, deer & bears
very lil' property damage
a few big rocks/chunks of granite cracked/fishered
& a few fell

if that happened down in the valley or bay,
it'd have been 100s if not more casualties
not to mention 10's billions $$s in damages to buildings,
businesses & roads/infrastructure

again glad to see no real bad came of it in rural NY

You want some real excitement try one above 9.0...
Wasn't Loma Prieta (spell ?) like 8.4 at the time or something like that
(Geology experts, they claimed it to actually was a bit higher, more manitude now)
Santa Cruz, Berkely/SF 1989 all the east bay, freeways (hwy 18) collapsed,
(Bay Bridge) parts of bridges collapsed,
almost anything built of brick was destroyed or seriously damaged

that was a nasty one

my stepdad Bob was up in Anchorage (1962 or 64 ?)
Fort Richardson Army base
when they had their 8.2 (8.4 ?,) )
(edited; added 2/7/22 it was made/or deemed to be a much larger Ricter scale later
I actually have a commemorative coin from it, has the #s embossed on it
I still have somewhere, I used as a golf/ball maker on the putting greens for years
)
it destroyed the coastal area of downtown
from C street or 4th street to the Cook Inlet, literally sluffed off or liquified
sunk like 8'-12' during the shaking, with a bunch of 6.0 & higher aftershocks

We haven't gotten any of those. The 3.8-4.2 is one of the largest here, as we are not in a Major Fault Line. It originated in Canada. Perhaps they were Blowing a DUMB, or one of the Tunnels under the Niagara River ???

Loma Prieta was 6.9 & lasted 15 seconds...

It was 59 years ago & I still remember it very well... Stuff like that will stick with you... It's strange watching the pavement having waves rolling past you...

For those who aren't aware the richter scale isn't linear.. A 8.0 isn't twice as powerful as a 4.0
a 4.0 is thirty times as powerful as a 3.0... A 5.0 is thirty times as powerful as a 4.0 but nine hundred times as powerful as a 3.0... A 6.0 is twenty seven thousand times as powerful as a 3.0
