Hi All,

Are '68 Charger 440 HP engines supposed to be orange or blue?

Thanks,
Steve.

Going back into the deep, dark recesses of my brain, I don't recall anything other than the turquoise color on the 68 non-hemi bb engines back then. Not to say that's gospel, just personal experience.

My 68 440 hp came orange
I read somewhere once that sometimes they ran out of turquoise paint on the assembly line and would switch to orange so there are random orange 68 motors out there

I'm in the camp that says the 68 440 was turquoise. After that I believe it was the hemi orange. I have a 68 440 and when I rebuilt it I painted it hemi Orange because I liked it better - though I'm not a purist. If you're a purist go with the turquoise.....

Thank you to you all for your input.
My engine is turquoise however I am currently rebuilding it and have revelled that it was orange before previous owners painted turquoise. I leaning towards the fact that it was originally orange.
Thanks again,
Steve.

That is mostly right. There is a transition to blue on 340's in about March of 71.
The turquoise description is wrong especially for '68.

Also, in 1969, a 340 could be blue, orange, OR red...No rhyme or reason to that one.

Very few blue 318s prior to 1972, BTW, although that color was out there on small blocks.

1968 440 = Turquoise. Even the HP engines.

The various assy plants did what they wanted to. All the 68' 340 Darts and Cuda engines I saw
on the showroom floor were red. In 69' all were turquoise. However, my friends new 340 Duster was red, and an Air force guy (as I was in an at the time) had a 70' 340 with a red engine. It seemed there was no particular reason for either.

In 1979 I had a 69' 440 RT/SE 440 magnum, orange engine, and the car was original, being only 10 years old. Back then, spending 900 bucks for it was a big deal.HA HA!

For the purist in life the 68 440 Super Commando was turquoise in color. All the rest I couldn't tell you with certainty. Seems as though there's a lot of disagreement. Glad I'm not a purist. I just like what I like......

I was a new car showroom junkie from 1964-70. and, The 68' 383-440's were turquoise in color. Two Barrel 383 thru 440 HP. Dodge, Plymouth,Chrysler. At least in Nebraska. Elsewhere?

In addition, I have an original 68' Road Runner 383 engine complete from Carb to oil pan, sitting in storage since 1984, and it is Turquoise.
