Hi, I have tried to find out more info on this engine a little while ago. Its a 64 cast B Block with TV-HP 14253C stamped under the distributor. I intend to remove a cylinder head and measure to bore to find out if its a 361 or 383. My question is that some web sites and pages list the 2128854 as a 361/383. Would that mean they cast one block and bored them to suit 361 and 383? Or did the have a different casting for the two engine sizes? I have see there are 2128854-1, 2128854-2 and 2128854-4 block castings.

Any info will be helpful thanks.

I cant help on the casting number, cant find it on my list, but i can tell you the -x is just the number of casting core revisions/repairs. Your -1 is an early block, cast on the first set of cores. Some of the later blocks that were used for multiple years have several core revisions . I have seen -8 and heard of higher.
Edit: hp on the pad probably means its a 383. Just my guess.

1964 361/383 block. only the bore size would be different. Could be bored either way.
4.120 or
4.250

My 1966 361 does not have any engine size cast into the block either. Just the stamping on the engine pad. Are you saying that the 361 and 383 blocks are the same casting?

it is marked some where to differentiat the 2 motors for tune up dont remember where though.

Several sites do list the casting number. 1964 B block. Could be a 361 or 383. Only thing that differentiates this would be on the stamp pad under the distributor. Sometimes the six digit on the stamp pad will. The OPs doesn't make sense for this to me. '64 - '65 they started doing the stamp pad a little different.

Enter the casting number in the Google search and a few sites and threads do come up.

The letter/number size looks too large, and the number "14253C" is not normal. We do need to see what is in front of the dash before "HP", but I would be inclined to say that either it is a factory warranty block, or it was machined before (Decked) and the shop put their job number on it.

I’d like to tag onto this thread if I may and ask for help figuring out when my block was made. On both sides I find the casting number 2205712-8. References only tell me that the 7 digit number is a 361 block made from 58’-66’. What is the -8?
On the pad under the distributor I find
S 36 (the 3 might be an 8)
HP - large letters
10-9
can anyone tell a date from this ?

-8 might have to do with the casting as in how many times the mold was reworked to use again.

On the pad under the distributor, "S" is the year 1962. "36" is the first two numbers in the cubic inch, 361.

S is for 62’ ?, that’s great to know! How does that sequence work? I know with 440s they started with B in 66’ or so. How do they sequence these motors?
Any thoughts about the HP ? I was under the impression that only the 413 got the HP in 62?

Canadian engines have numbers similar to that, stamped on block. Check out where the car engine may have come from.
