bought my GTX in 85...... appeared to be bone stock, unmolested, and a little beat up with 114,000 miles....unaware of "numbers", I assumed it to be the original engine, and I pulled it out to save it for later
fast forward to a time where I rebuild the 440, and started to become aware of build dates, HP stamps ect....... my intake and exhaust manifolds all predate the fender tag date by about 3 weeks, everything Oct 67; BUT the block is was stamped D440 5 12 indicating May 68 assembly, no HP, and no other stampings anywhere. So I assume its a warranty replacement block with all my original pieces bolted to it. Anyone care to poke a hole in my theory?
