I know it's not "exterior", but it is paint and I got very little feedback from "engine trans and driveline", so...

I have a bare block I want to paint before I build. I'd like to know what is the best brand and method of prep and paint. One thing in particular, Eastwood has Hemi orange in a quart size but not a spray can. I can get a sprayer, but the directions say it can be brushed on. Anyone have luck with that. Which method is better?

Andrew,a quart can paint at least 10 engines! I am picky about the shade of orange and prefer the "RACE" hemi orange from MOPAR PERFORMANCE.Will also add that 4 outta 10 cans are duds.I'll assume you know how to clean & degrease before painting, right????

Plastikote #226 covers really well and is one of the better spray on paints I've found.

Use a good wax and grease remover on the engine before applying and you should be fine.

Would you say it is closer to street or race hemi orange??

The plastikote paint in a spray can worked very well for me

To my eye, it looks more like race orange.

brush or spray your preference; if you have a gun, a booth, and time to mask it all off, more power to ya!

i have heard a lot of good stuff about eastwoods paints and equip. it is a bit spendy, but good quality.

Ah! i see... i thought you were talkin' bout da quart paint!! :sleepy2:

im goin back to bed now...

Id also add not to use VHT hemi orange as its very thin paint, where as mopar brand engine paint is much thicker.

Thanks for all the reponses. I would have prefferred the Race Hemi color but could't find it in a spray can except from Mopar performance, and a few of you guys said it's not good so I went with duplicolor primer, hemi orange and clear coat. Not suer if I'll clear coat it or not but it was only 6 bucks.

Before i got my car someone used some cheap crap on the engine and its bad, period. I would suggest the Mopar brands. Make sure its clean and decreased, even bare block looking good, touching tools or anything else you can get it on your block. Good luck
