factory oil filters... painted with engine or not?

Was the filter painted on the engine or not?

Both Dave and you bring up valid points. The filter is somewhat delicate vs. the harder metal parts such as cast iron exhaust manifolds and fuel pump (which for the most part is protected by the block). If the filter was installed, there is a chance that it could get damaged in transit from where the engines are assembled to where it would be fitted onto the hoist to lift / raise into the car.

Some times I change the oil in my car(s) when it gets put away for the winter and midway through the season depening on how much driving I've done. Usually just before Carlisle.
What would be nice is if someone came up with a kit that included a rattle can of correct color, be it the white or green depending on your preference and clear stickers to install to make a replacement look OE. Maybe to do 4 filters.
Reasonable price ... I'd buy that in a heartbeat.
But I agree, a replacement part I'm going to throw away in 6 months time - for prices like that , I wouldn't pay it, no way!

Funny, way back then, changing these filters, some for the first time.. this thought NEVER occurred to me.

I just painted my motor and used a nos blue filter and over sprayed it... lol
