The item was the dipstick. The TRANSMISSION DIPSTICK!

Little background on that Ford at the time...
I had just made a repair to it before I put it back on the road after winter storage.
I had to replace a soft plug (freeze plug/core plug) after one popped due to a very weak antifreeze mix while being stored for the winter.
Well, little did I know that the radiator froze too, damaging the internal transmission cooler.
This led to antifreeze getting into the transmission and the pressure from the hot antifreeze in the transmission popped that dipstick out like a rocket, putting a dimple in the hood! Milky transmission fluid went all over the place!
The rest of that trip the transmission would slip out of gear when I applied too much throttle, but I made it to my destination.
Needless to say I had that Ford-O-Matic 2 speed rebuilt not long after

My friend bought a 70 Charger R/T and the guy he bought it from replaced the spring in the oil pump with one from a John Deere tractor. When he started the car up,it blew the oil filter apart,and was spraying oil out the front of the car. I screamed at the guy to shut it off!
Been there and done that
I didn't want to highjack my own thread by commenting on this. But you make a very good point. The previous month's Plymouth had "six pack" on it.
