First Car Restoration - Maryland

Hey y'all. I recently got a car ive always wanted since i was 6 years old from my uncle which he got when he was 30. Now im 30 and he passed it on to me. Unfortunately, its been sitting for the past 7-9 years and hasnt ran in 7 years. Ive removed the 6pack carbs from it and cleaned them, dumped some trans fluid down into the engine to free up the pistons,rings. Pulled the plugs out and turned engine over by hand. Then hooked up and tested the starter and cranked with starter. Everything seems to be good. My project for this weekend will be reinstalling the carbs, installing new fuel tank and fuel sending unit. Installing freshly rebuilt alternator and starter. Re-installing the steering column(had to move out of the way to get the starter out from behind the headers). Hopefully I will be getting her fired up this weekend.

The car is a 71 Roadrunner with a 383 w/ bigger cam and 6pack with orange ignition box. It was a stick car but someone before my uncle put an 4spd automatic in it. I would like to convert it back to manual. Its original color was brown and someone painted it the puke green color that i love. Its in pretty rough shape but for right now, I want to just get it running and enjoy the sound of it. The interior is in great shape, all new. Exterior has a bunch of rust that needs to be taken care of.

I will be posting more pictures after this weekend of everything ive done. Ive also cleaned it up a bit since these pictures were taken. These pics were taken as soon as i picked it up.

I had to do a double take. Another member just joined here today with a 71 RR, same color. That doesn't happen too often. Good luck on getting her going again.

I never heard of someone removing the steering column before to get to the starter. Most will remove the driver side motor mount, loosen the header, Jack up the motor on that side and wiggle each until the starter comes out. Sounds like fun!

The original color is a brownish bronze looking color. Not sure what the exact name of it is. You can see it under the poorly painted body. Eventually after all the mechanical and driveline stuff is handled, the body will be fixed and painted. I think im gonna stick with the factory green color and not keep it the original brown/bronze looking color

i will have to check in morning. That color looks pretty good in the pic you added. It might be that color. Ill take a pic of the tag as well tomorrow morning

also... the steering column is so much easier to pull out then remove motor mount, remove header, etc. it was literally 4 bolts and a roll pin. it has hooker headers on it so im not sure if that makes it a bit different for removal or not.

thank you everyone. got a lot more done this past weekend. new fuel tank and sending unit is in. has to make new hardware for fuel tank straps. got the carburetors back on and ended up having to take the metering blocks off to fix a couple clogged up holes. I blew air through all the holes to make sure its ok. Re-assembled with new gaskets. Got them mounted and need to finish up the linkage for the 6pack. Got the alternator and starter back in. Got new spark plugs in. I need to put a new section of 5/16" metal fuel line on going to lift pump to inline fuel filter and a new filter as well. Then she should be ready to start. fingers crossed.

Got the car running this weekend! Fired right up on the 1st crank( not bad for not running in over 7 years). I will try and post a video
