Front shock bushing removal? Under car now.

Any reason not to carve out the old compressed bushings to make way for the new gas-adjust?

If they are the one piece type that have to be cut out, yes. They are over 50 years old and likely too hard to do any compressing. The bushings need to flex and give as the car is going over irregularities in the road.
 
New shocks and no new bushings?
 
No no I was just paranoid that the new bushings might not fit the lower control arm after it's 50 year divorce from what might well be the original shock ')
 
Was going to say " oh...bushings too?" But I'm kinda new here so ...

Judging by the picture, the front end hasn't seen much in the way of normal maintenance. Lube that front end and check the lower bushings as well. Tie rod sleeve looks like it had been awhile since that car has seen an alignment.
