Fuel line size on a 1969 dodge 440 HP

Fuel line going from the tank through the vapor canister goes right to the fuel pump and then there's a 5/16 line that runs backwards to the tank

It’s a 5/16” ID hose. It is forced onto the 3/8” nipple.

That seems pretty Mickey Mouse.....
