Fuel Pump for a 68 Plymouth GTX

Gentleman got a question: should I replace my fuel pump on the 440 or have the original one rebuilt?

I can get a new one for $44.99 or I can have the original one rebuilt for $129.99 plus shipping. I am trying to keep this car original but does it matter when talking about the fuel pump?

I'm no "concours" expert, but is there a part number on it? Is that what your going for? I know some of these guys want the exact coating on bolts you can't even see....not to make fun...that IS original. I would vote "no" but if there is even a tiny bit of difference, there are plenty out there who would vote "yes". It's a question that you have to ask yourself (and your wallet)

If it really matters to you, have it rebuilt. If on a budget, buy a replacement and keep the old one so if you change your mind later you can, or if you sell the car to a purist you can throw in the original pump.

Personally, I would replace with no hesitation. The 4589 from Summit is $25.50. Git 'er done.

Thanks guys, I'm still new to the restortation process so that's the reason I asked. My car is original and I'm just trying to keep it as original as possible but I do understand the cost to do that is higher. I just don't want to be "that guy" when asked is the car original and then people point out things that is not. That's all

I certainly value everyone's comments on here cause you guys have been in the trenches, and I'm still getting my feet wet.

I go to my local parts store. Not the Autozones, etc. My Car Quest can get me American (or Canada) parts, for a little more still with a warranty. Keep the original in case you want it later.

parts like this or brakes for example; I would just get the best new ones you can get.

save the "original" or concurs parts for other stuff like interior or visible-type items.

you want the car to be reliable and useable IMHO.

the HP 440's had a unique pump vs the non-HP 440's and 383's. to my knowledge nobody repops the HP pump. the HP pump was a higher pressure pump to compensate for the vapor seperator/return line.
