Garage /shop layout

I'm not quite sure how many of you fine folks actually laid out a plan when you arranged your garage .
As for my self ,I've just sort of made room for new tools and bigger pieces of equipment .
I'm about to haul ablsolutely everything out of the garage and barn and start over .
If you were to start from scratch laying out a work space for both metal and wood working what would it look like ?
Most of the metal working is done in the garage and the barn is almost entirely wood .

I think most of us just make due with the space we have. Mine is primarily a wood working shop where I build cabinets but am able to machine 16 foot material. In this space I have an are about the size of a 2 stall garage, where I have built a few vehicles from the ground up. I also do repairs in this space when needed, and during the winter months , I store my 2 cars. ruffcut

If you do a lot of metal work then you need it totally walled off from where your cars are. You want to contain the dust, smoke and sparks. And if you do a lot of welding , invest in a smoke extractor AND a good mask.

As for shop layout ... lots of electrical outlets at 4' height. Lots of air outlets as well. Its easier to keep a shop clean if there's nothing on the floors. What can't be stored off the floor should be on casters so its easily moved.

Plenty of lighting and clean, light colored walls.

Heating and a/c for year-round comfort. A toilet and hot and cold running water are nice to have.

I planned out my entire shot from paint booth. Brighter lights under mezz for more involved work. We’re all car lifts went how far from wall all welding outlets locations.

Every man door,bathroom,sink. Still need to complete the bathroom, paint room and sink tie in. But always something. Wood working is in my other outdoor shop.

I bought a movable 4 post lift so I can place it close to my wood burning stove, workbench and tools if I’m doing a big car project or move it out of the way if working on trucks or tractors. So far I’m happy with the choice.

I planned the hell out of my shop and it still is not perfect. I have a separate wood shop with in floor dust collection. I set the garage up with a dirty end and a office and full bath room on the opposite end. I have 2 floor ports for exhaust (used with rubber hoses) behind each of the 3 service bays. My greatest issue is lack of wall space for all my equipment. I make do.

I have 32x54. Yes specifically planned that way. 14 off one end for an office, bench area both 14x16 and mezzanine up top 14x32. Bench area turned into the build bay as well under there. Then the main door comes in at the side of that into my 32x40 shop area. 3 bays on the right end, one with a 4 post, and the main drive in work bay by the office wall and bench area off to the left. It was all by design. 32 gave me room for welding bench, shelves and crap along the walls.

No you can’t have a car on it to move it.

I have a 24' x 25' 2-1/2 car garage. I use every square in of it. Usually, when I am welding, fabricating, painting and grinding. I pull the other cars out unless it is just small bench work. Alot of cars have been restored, race cars built, plumbed and wired. Along with trucks, quads, sleds, dirt and road bikes have been built in this garage over the years.

After the building burned to the ground and losing everything in a fire a year ago, we went back to the drawing board to design and build it better than before. Higher roof, ceiling and windows. A loft, kitchen and bathroom was added, had to re-run water and gas lines, all electrical and lighting, heat and a big azz fan is better. Positioned the two and four post lifts and dropped electrical out of the ceiling. Almost done.

Friend of mine has a gorgeous building with a designated work area and lifts, but mostly displaying his cars. He hosts RC drags every couple of weeks.

The cars look miniature in there. Cannot even see the wall to the right. I’m guessing the fans are in the middle.

The main building is 80x200. There is an adjoining bar and entertaining area off to the right that is 60x60.

Mine is small at 28' x 40' I only had so much room to be able to use...

The property is a 28 degree slope so a huge pole barn type building would be impossible...

I was able to get a 12' x 40' basement underneath the back half that is 9' high which works well for storage and hiding the air compressor and heating system...

Pex is installed in 4 loops in the concrete so no moving air hoping its easier to keep clean...

My project had to be done in several phases over a 8 year span...both financial reasons and county bull$hit controlled the timeline and size of the finished project...

I started with a wooded sloped grassy hill...added the retaining wall for parking of cars and trailers...then proceeded with the garage...
