Gasoline smell

Thanks to all. I haven't prept the car to go out just yet.
Weather is getting better so maybe next week.

I'll try addressing this utilizing some of the recommendations.
I'll post back after we're up and running.
Again, thanks to all.
The knowledge here is invaluable.

I've been on this site since 2008. I've learned a lot....

My 65 Sport Fury always seemed have a gas smell after driving it. I thought it was coming from the tank or vented gas cap and wafting from there but one day found it by accident. I could never find any drips of gas in the garage so never considered a real leak. One day after driving I had it idling in the driveway and noticed a drip on the ground under the fuel pump. A bit of research found the fuel pump fitting wet but only leaked at higher rpms. I tightened up the fitting and no longer have the smell. It don't take much of a leak to cause a stink so diligence is king. A strong odor points to a leak rather than a vapor.

Well, after putting the car on a lift, at 76 years old I'm not crawling under anymore.....
anyway, there are 2 vent lines in the tank One vent line goes out in the rear wheeel well and the other one just goes up and over a cross brace and vents under the car into the air...
Evidently, the short vent line is the one thats purgers.
I guess just opening the gas cap to reduce the pressure so it doesn't purg may work.

Question .... why 2 vent lines ?????

I do not think there should be two. The long one with the grommets is all you should need. I would cap the other one off.

Got it.

I see that my tank has the two vent lines.
I agree,
I think I'll cap off the short one.
Thanks

I had fuel odor smell in the garage with no apparent leaks and installed one of these trunk mounted vapor filters. It allows fuel vapors to pass through a charcoal canister before venting to outside. After install, fuel smell after a long drive is gone. I'm very pleased and highly recommend it. However, I can still smell exhaust after engine shutoff so I leave the tail end outside for 15 minutes with the fan on before closing the garage door.

Today's fuel is formulated for closed fuel injection systems, and is more volatile than the fuels we used to use in our carburetors. The smell you have is from vapours percolating out of your hot engine/carb. I blocked the heat riser ports off in my heads so the intake manifold and carb do not get so hot. This helped greatly with the gas smell in the garage, with no summer probability problems.
This.
