When I was in my teens, my buddies and I would go surfing quite often in Imperial Beach, Coronado Island, Moro Bay and Avila Beach.
One time at CI as I was walking out to get in deeper water, something rigged under my foot and I swear to this day, I became just like Jesus cause I don’t remember running on sand!!!
After that little encounter, I paid A LOT more attention to my surroundings!
I can remember diving off the coast here. Almost always the water is cold and not great visibility. Sometimes can’t even see your hand in front of your face! I would most always abort the dive when conditions were or became that way. If you’re recreational diving and can’t see, what the hell good is it.
ok that said, one hot calm summer day Several years ago the guy that owned the local dive shop called me up and said let’s go. We get our stuff on and get wet. Visibility was incredible for this area a good 20 feet or so.. were down about 35’ and he taps me on my shoulder and points to the surface. Overhead was a huge great white! Seemed like 40 feet! Of course it wasn’t that big but I about swallowed my regulator! We hung on the bottom for a few moments to let it pass by and when I didn’t see it, Dive was over! Back on shore I recall saying maybe it’s better with no visibility, you can’t see what’s around you!
I never thought a great white would make it this far north in the cold waters but I was wrong!
Two Great whites were spotted just off the coast of the next village along from me a while back....Selsey Bill on the South central coast of the UK...so i dont think cold water is an issue for them. I would love to have seen one!
