Help a Gal with Power Steering Box

I agree with going for the Borgeson steering gear since you already have the Borgeson pump. I have heard the Borgeson pump needs to have the pressure toned down a bit if using with a stock steering gear. It will work perfectly with the Borgeson gear.

Thanks for the response. So I went ahead and installed the remanufactured box from Autozone. But after looking at it I'm fairly confident it's a Lares brand box. It appears to be doing alright. I've not driven it much. The only problem I had was I heated the original crush washer to restore its softness but it still poured the fluid. Replaced that and everything appears to be working as it should. I did replace the internal parts and gasket on the steering shaft coupler while I had it apart.

Sorry for your loss.

So adjusting the control valve on top of the box will cure the steering “creep”. Details are in the correct shop manual for your car. Not hard to do. Essentially jack front wheels off ground , loosen the two bolts holding the control valve, and tighten finger tight. while car is idling, lightly tap the valve forwards/back until steering wheel stays still. Retighten control valve bolts. Also Check for leaks under the control valve, that’s probably the biggest source of leaks on these boxes. I’d jump on the free offer.

If your son is VERY mechanically inclined. You could rebuild at home using a $80 Kit from Rockauto.com. Not super hard but cleanliness and attention to details is paramount.

Do not hold the steering wheel if attempting the centring procedure the hydraulics are strong enough to break your wrist if adjusted to far

I hate to preface this with THIS but if price is not an object, the Borgeson steering box is an excellent choice. This site has a sponsor known as Bergman Auto Craft that sells a kit that makes it all a bolt in deal. It is about $900+ including shipping, or it was a couple of years ago. Inflation has hit everything.
The Borgeson unit will feel much more like a modern car than any other option.
A far off, distant option is a quality rebuild from Firm Feel or Steer and Gear. Nothing that you buy at a parts store or Classic industries can compete with an original steering box that is properly rebuilt. Keep in mind that the slop that the factory steering boxes have at the center of the travel will still be there in any OEM steering box. You can adjust some of it out but it will always be there and increase as time and miles March on.
Good luck…
The wife and I considered a move to Kingman last year. We places an offer on a place on Bull Mountain but got overbid.
Try a Lares 11043. Check them out, I think Summit has the best price. Its 2.5 turns lock to lock.
