I'm pretty sure I have an 8.75 rear end, but I need help identifying the center section. I can't seem to find any tell tale markings on whether it's perhaps a 742 or 489.

I'm assuming it's a 489, because the car is a '69 Satellite with a 318. I don't see a big "9" however, nor have I found a "2".

I bent the rear right axle and I figure I should know the center section type before finding a new or used axle.

Maybe these pics will help:

that's not an 8-3/4" rear..that diff you got has a rear cover....

the 8-3/4 rear gear drops out as a unit from the front of the differential housing

I'm gonna say it's an 8.25" rear end

No, you have an 8 1/4 rear end. The pan on the back is unmistakable. I had a 69' charger with the same rear. it was standard, 8 3/4 was optional from 69' forward on 318 B body cars.

I recommend you dump I, and get a good 8 3/4 rear end.

That cover has an odd crease down the center, but I will agree you have what strongly appears to be an 8.25". These are C clip axles so the cover has to be removed to pull the axles. Really easy.

Thanks so much for your replies guys. I dont think Im ready to do a whole rear change just yet. I just want to find a replacement axle for the bent one.

So, according to this chart, the 8.75 is the only one that opens from the front?

Yes.

The 8.25" will get you by just fine, especially with a 318. No reason to change it unless you will dump a bunch of power through it. I had a couple apart and thought it was pretty stout with fairly large bearings.

Do not buy the Jeep axle....... It is not the same.

Different model lines like the A, B, C ect..ect.. bodies had different axle/housing lengths for the same rear ends.

Would the spline count I'm looking for be 29?

I think it's 27 for the older MoPars. You should just pull it, measure and count splines that way you will know for sure. Don't forget new seals and bearings.
