HELP: Loose stud in 8 3/4 housing

There are ten carrier mounting studs. One stud wiggles a bit. First thought was to drive out loose stud and install with JB Weld. Any other ideas?

You could tack weld it, get new ones, or drill/tap it for a bolt. I personally wouldn't use JB weld on it.

Where can I buy a new stud? JEGS sells ARP set for Ford 9 inch rear carrier; will those work?

NAPA or any good parts house will have replacement studs, maybe even in slightly oversized if the hole is buggered.

put new stud in, it should be good to go..I bet the old stud does not have any splines left

If the axle end where the stud goes is wallowed out you may want to replace the axle, cheaper than loosing a wheel while driving.

now imagine your on a two lane and you meet that in the oncoming lane

Sorry if anyone is confused; I need the carrier mounting stud not a wheel mounting/axle stud. Thanks for the replies.

Dr Diff told me you can't find them anymore. The only ones I can find are for the Ford 9 inch.

I found the backing plate studs, not sure if they could be used or not.

Also just checked moparts.com, and who would've thought of this.....a ferd 9 studs are a direct bolt in, but are just a tad longer. If you use those, I won't hold it against ya, lol!!

I'd zap it on the back side with a MIG or TIG. Just make sure it's super clean.

I'd do exactly what Meep's suggests here.

Otherwise gently tap the stud out and take it down to the local auto parts store, they should be able to mic the diameters and pick one off the shelf. They should be a pretty standard stud. Even if its not fine thread you can still replace it.

that should be a screw in stud,no access to back side.do like pops said and use a heli coil setup.jb weld is not strong enough in that way,do it right.

I wonder why Dr Diff told me they are hard to find? He old me to use JB Weld.

I removed the stud, the splines look new. So, I put JB Weld on it and popped it back in. With 9 other studs holding and this one taking over 3000 pounds of force to brake loose (according to the JB Weld product specs), I think I'll be fine.

I got some replacements for mine a few years back from Car Quest....in little bins in front of counter

there is nothing special about them....just a standard stud

I guess I assumed they pressed in like wheel studs, never took the time to investigate when I had mine apart since none of them were loose.

In that case, a touch of jb weld in there is probably enough to lock it into place.
