Help! Strange ignition problem continues 1971 440 4 speed

Hi there. Back on 1972 I had a similar situation with my GTX 1969 4SPDS, it started with the ignition switch and lights switch while its started cold it worked fine at daytime but at night lights and engine one or the other went off. When checking the main plug from the firewall to th inside the cables were kind of /burnt out replace all wire connectors and problem solved. Check those and the choke. carburetor. I change the carburetor from an electric choke to a Holley manual one and worked fine.
Thanks for the tip--appreciate it.

magnetic pick up in the distributor - a most common failure but overlooked by the rocket scientists on all the forums

connect an ohm meter to the 2 terminals and spin the distributor. The ohm meter will change state from a reading in ohms to open circuit as the reluctor passes the pick up.
I picked up a new distributor for $103 and simply replaced it. It worked. The problem was the distributor--perhaps the pickup coil, not sure. But problem is solved. Thanks to everyone who made suggestions and thanks Mopar Miki.

This is a completely different vehicle, but similar symptoms.

90’s toyota 4 cylinders, 2.2l, and I think 1.8’s also.
The distributor was on the end of the head, with the coil inside. The engine heat/vibration would cause the coil to split and when it heated up it expand enough to keep the engine from running until it cooled down.

Frustrating to pinpoint.
