So I’m trying to reinstall my heavy ass steering gearbox on my back and I cannot get the top mounting bolt to go in all the way stops half way.I’m not sure what is going on. is it stripped? if so am I screwed? Can I use only two bolts?

are the threads jacked up? did you try switching the bolts,is the gearbox tight to the block? Slow down and look at the bolts.Your not screwed.

I tried all three bolts same result the other two mounting holes have no problems.. Trying to start them with the box off. I cant see the threads. At first I got the bottom bolt in with the box in but couldn’t get top one started. I hope I didn’t damage anything.

The 833 4 speed uses 4 bolts, not three, right?
(OP edited the first post to clarify he meant the steering box, not"gearbox")

Not a transmission? Well, that is different. Maybe you are frustrated and forgot to make that clear.

The holes for the steering gearbox are just barely larger than the mounting bolts so if the box is not correctly in position, the bolts may not thread in easily.

SLOW DOWN!!! First, remove the steering box. Now, chase the threads on EVERY hole. After that, check EVERY bolt to ensure that there is no damage, cross threading, marred threads, etc. If you have access, clean the threads with a wire wheel. Try ALL the bolts BEFORE installing the steering box. You CAN NOT install the box missing a bolt!!

Also, try each bolt in each hole to make sure if its a bolt, or a hole.

As stated pull box out ! Clean holes bolts chase threads see if bolts go in and out . If they do great that's not your issue ,first ? Did you compare the boxs to make sure the holes are in the correct place? You would be amazed at the crap they will sell you . Start the bolts is bolt still an issue? Make sure other two are loose still move boxes around till 3rd bolt starts there's alot of play if it's just hanging on 2 the 3rd you'll never start only half your hole will be showing.

Maybe unbolt the motor mounts and lift the engine a couple inches?

Going to try a shorter bolt might have enough threads to hold on to gearbox.

Why not just do it the right way? Do you know how much stress is transferred onto those bolts? You are going to create a bigger mess than what you already have.
