Is there a source for a higher quality (double lip?) input seal for the A833. Mine was leaking pretty good and the seal doesn’t look damaged but the input is a bit rough. I can polish it up a little but don’t want to just throw another standard seal on it and expect a different result.

A sleeve might be a solution if there is a source for one for a 23 spline?

Or a shim washer in the bearing retainer recesses to space the seal rearward slightly. Might be hard to find.

Thanks

Whats a 23 spline doing in that car ?

Hopefully you knew that before removing it

PS, might be time to call Brewers

Yes, I figured it out shortly after buying. The case number was interchangeable for a 307 bearing early 18/23 spline transmission but the tail housing was for a 23 spline as I recall. So it lost its 18 spline over time. Still has the Hemi bell housing 172 tooth flywheel and starter though.

If I knew someone who was willing to buy this one I might buy an 18 spline but I don’t want to lay out that much money an$ have this one laying around my garage.

Was the seal old? Rubber loses its elasticity with age-like we do!
Mike

No, I would say the seal looked pretty good and not old - but sure wasn’t sealing. I’m measuring the seal area on the shaft at 1.056 to 1.057” so I don’t know what stock is. The seal was not in backwards either.

I’m not finding a sleeve that will fit which is probably why no one lists one specific to the 23 spline input. My shaft measures 1.056/7 inches and all I can find have an inside diameter of 1.063 inches. The next one down is 1.024”. So guess I’m stuck with just trying a new seal. I’ve been measuring with my old caliper, guess I need to check with my electronic one.

Edit: checked dia with my electronic caliper with same result.

Looks like you have material to polish it & make it better...

Yeah, that looks promising. I polished it with some 800 yesterday and it looked much better. I’ll try slicking it up with some 1000 and give it a try?

It’s always possible who ever was in this transmission last just failed to replace the seal and it was just worn.

Thanks.

I notice Rockauto lists this seal for the A745 and A903 but no mention of the A833.

Is it safe to assume they all use the same seal?

Just to mention it make sure the front bearing is in good shape and the pilot bushing is as well. Ball bearings have poor side loading properties, and the pilot bushing help hold the input shaft in alignment, no seal will work right if the shaft can wobble or gets pushed to one side. Drain hole in front retainer cannot be clogged and it needs a good vent. Having said all that I been messing with Chrysler 4 speeds over 50 years and they are just prone to seep fluid.

Yes, I’ll check the pilot bushing. Actually the input shaft/front bearing is a lot tighter than what I’m used to and the tip looks pretty good if not pristine. I’m used to Muncies that wiggle all over the place.

I noted the SKF listed seal on Rockauto is for a shaft dia of 1.063”. If someone installed one of those without checking it would probably leak like mine was.
