Horn contact lube

Getting a dry squeak sound when turning the steering wheel, took things apart and found it's coming from the spring loaded brass contact where it rides on the circular horn contact. Was thinking of using dielectric grease, would that be okay ? Or is there something better recommended.

If it's not worn out, (rolling ok), dielectric grease will be ok. I used it on mine but just a real thin application after cleaning the contact plate with electronic cleaner. Applied some to the side of the roller and worked it in real good.

maybe that's the problem. Mine is an aftermarket T/S switch. No roller, just a spring loaded, rounded tip. Only a few months old.

What did the original one look like? I guess they might have done away with the roller at one time?

Looking them up on Fleabay, it looks like 1970 had a roller, 1971-74 had the pin. I'd use the grease and let it go. If it's dry it's going to squeak.

And after awhile it will start again.Changed the switch on my 63 Valiant daily driver.The new one didn't have a roller.Lubed with dielectric. After a year the noise came back.Went heavier with the dielectric the second time.

Use a dab of graphite based chassis grease. Will last longer.

Not to flame MW 413, but graphite is conductive. Go with dielectric grease for sure.

Hmmm... graphite is conductive, the other part of the grease is not conductive....it might actually work.... but I would still suggest dielectric grease.

There is not enough graphite concentration in the grease to carry current.

So, my original did have the roller wheel like this. Luckily i've saved all the parts i've swapped out on this car so had it still to look at. I did put it back together this morning with the Di-electric grease and it's perfectly quiet now. If that doesn't hold up, i'll look into fabbing the old roller into this new switch mechanism.

You could research the ones for a year earlier and see if they look the same. Same amount of wires, color of wires, turn signal arm mount, ect. They might be the same. I saw some on Fleabay that were NOS but they were very pricy!
