Feeling hot to a human is anything over 120*. Water boils at 212*. Exhaust piping will be 250+. Hotter on single exhaust cars and restrictive systems than a good flowing setup (single or dual). If there's a hole, yeah, the jet of exhaust gases are a lot hotter and can light stuff on fire. But the post was it gets extremely hot - that's a perception - not the reality. If you're that worried buy a cheap infra-red temp gun and shoot a few places. You might be surprised.
