How to tell if a factory crank dampner is for a steel crank

What do i look for to i d a cast or steel crank dampner?

I read somewhere that a cast crank dampner will say so on the dampner. If you are replacing it I wouldn't use a used one. New ones aren't that expensive. If you are trying to determine if you have a cast or forged crank, they only used them in certain engines and certain years. There are lots of charts online. Have your block casting #. Cast cranks are externally balanced, forged are internally balanced. On a cast crank there will be weights on your flywheel. Not so on a forged crank.

I do not have a dampner at all.

Steel crank damper is round and thin with no lobe to offset for balancing. It is completely neutral balance. A cast crank balancer is thicker, and has a lobe to offset for the balance externally. Also the cast crank balancer should say cast crank or something on it. Most forged steel balancers I have seen say nothing on them.
