I’m having shifting issues on my semi late model (11 year old) beater.
I got to work a few weeks ago and pulled into parking, had to wait for a minute before I could maneuver into a spot, and when I did I found it hard to get the shifter into 1st. Then at the end of the day I got in car and clutch pedal was stuck to the floor from when I shut off the car.
I played with it and got it to return and was able to nurse the car home. I then took it to a shop and they said the hydraulics were bad, they replaced the slave but said the master still seemed ok when they bled it.
The shifting still didn’t feel right for my few mile drive home after picking it up Friday. Today I used the car for a 15 mile trip, started out feeling not bad but by the time I got near my destination I could hardly get the shifter into 1st when a light turned green.
Sometimes the pedal didn’t return fully either, had to nudge with my toe to get it to spring back the last inch of travel.
Other than starting out in 1st, shifting into gears was fine so I suspected the clutch isn’t fully disengaging. I confirmed that when I got home, after fighting to shift into reverse the car crept with the clutch pedal fully down.
So I gotta call the shop tomorrow. Either the slave they installed is defective or they guessed wrong on the problem.
How does a tech figure out if a clutch slave, master or something else is wrong?
It’s a pretty expensive parts cannon to fire at a problem and the car’s not worth much anyway!

What kind of beater is said beater

My beater with a heater is a Dart 2.4 that I've owned since new. The shop said to bring it back in, I just am wary of them replacing additional parts until the problem resolved as the issue I brought it in for seems unchanged from before they installed a new clutch slave assembly.

Oh ok. I've seen it in the cobalt type cars where there is a strange damper in line, and it would end up kind of like a one way valve. But that's those little chevies.

The clutch line for the Dart is pretty odd looking with a damper too. I've driven sticks most of my driving career, and not been a fan of the clutch pedal in the Dart. It's soft as a pillow and hard to ease the pedal out for a smooth launch in 1st gear.

I must be doing something right though despite the wonky clutch pedal, the car has 134K miles and the shop said when they took the trans out they might find my clutch is pretty worn out. When I picked it up the guy said the clutch had wear but was still OK.
I had a T bird SC back in the 90s that had close to 200K miles when I sold it after owning it 10 years and still had the original clutch.
