Hello all,

My fuel pump crapped out, and I need to install a replacement. I have already pulled the old pump, but have a question on the best way to position things to install the new pump.

I plan on rotating the engine for the eccentric on the cam to allow the fuel pump pushrod to receed, but what is a good way to have the pushrod remain in its upward position while I bolt the fuel pump on?

Currently, the pushrod is dropped down, and is resting on the block plug that seals its exterior insertion hole.

My plan is to rotate the engine to allow the max upward movement of the pushrod, pull the plug, remove the pushrod, give it a liberal coating of grease, reinstall the pushrod, and see if it stays up in its place while I install the new pump.

Any better techniques out there for this operation?

Mike

While you have the pump out, remove the rod plug and check your push rod and measure it. It should be 3.22, or just a tiny bit under 3 1/4" long. If not, you might want to consider replacement. I't is a common problem with the big blocks.
To hold up the rod, you are correct with thick grease or Vaseline jelly works well.

I use a bent hacksaw blade to hold the rod up while sliding the pump arm in. I would also just replace the rod while you have everything apart.

Don't swap ends, put it back in the same way it comes out.
