I thought they have the date and shift cast into the block near the part number?
I think the J is 1973? Does it need to be date coded?

I just wanted to be sure on the year. I'm going to try and buy it. The original owner passed away and I'm having to deal with the family members.

Might be able to tell by casting number, but I don't have my reference book here at work

The Vin should be on a pad just above the oil pan rail. If it's eight digits, the first digit will be the year of the car it was in, the second will be the assembly plant.

The E is for cast crank... I think. I never had one.

mymopar casting sheet is missing some info. like the 72 400 "cold weather block" casting number 230. 440 source has a version also under site info.
