kickdown linkage question

Also the picture shows the wrong kickdown spring attached to the wrong part of the linkage . it should be always holding the rod full forward in order to properly control the line pressure.

Leo, if you had read what I had written when I posted the picture...you would know that I know they are in the wrong positions. They are going to get replaced anyway. I moved them for picture clarity

This is what I have, so far. The rod was way too short, which wouldn't allow me to get anywhere close to proper adjustment. Don't mind the old out of place springs.

As a test you can try a 1/4" stubby little carriage bolt 3/16" from the throttle shaft.
Where the blue dot is below. See if you have full throttle plate opening or if the kickdown lever hits full travel first.
As you know they need to hit close together at full throttle.
That should improve your shift points and you can still keep looking for linkage that fits better.

Don, that is what I did when you suggested it after our first road adventure. Even so, it wouldn't shift into 3rd anymore. That is why I am trying different things. I want to get it set up correctly so I can determine if it is the linkage or the transmission itself that is the 3rd gear issue.

If it were me and just to test, I would put a nut and bolt in the slot directly behind the pin on the carb and take it for a drive. If it is close to shifting correctly I would modify/lengthen the slotted lever by adding material. How much? Adjust the slide to a centered position and measure from the carb pin to the back of the slot on the lever and add that much to the lever. Catch my drift? The carb linkage pin should be at the back of the slot it rides in and if the adjustment slot (further back on the linkage) is in the middle, you will have some play both directions for adjustment. Bottom line like it was mentioned, it probably has 383 linkage and it isn't long enough in certain places to work correctly.
