Law Enforcement apprehends a ‘Bad Guy’ FBBO member at Carlisle

In the great deep blue state of CT cops cannot pull anyone over move "defective equipment" such as a tail light. the legislature decided it was racial profiling.
That's the problem with a lot of these small boroughs in PA. They usually have a few full time guys and then several part timer's. The overall quality of the individuals applying for these positions IMO is substandard, and has been for many years. But a lot of departments, including PSP have been lowering the standards to encourage substandard people to apply. Oh, too many people are out of shape and can't make the sit-up requirement, no problem we will just remove the sit-up requirement.

You can't write an equipment issue as a moving violation. The PA Vehicle Code defines the difference with the applicable sections. Traffic stop conversations like the one above are from cops that are issuing tickets for stats to justify how they spent their time on shift and keep a supervisor off their back instead of actually doing police work.
What was a bit amusing in retrospect, was that I dealt with this stuff as an attorney for four decades, including a decade as a general counsel dealing with 900 trucks. I always advised my drivers not to argue the law on the side of the road. My former trooper friend was starting to escalate with the officer, vehemently asserting that he was a first hand witness to me activating the turn signal, and pointing out that the dash and fender indicators were flashing. When it became obvious I was still going to get the moving violation, I asked him to back off. I politely told the officer this wasn't my first rodeo, and I would take him at his word, and see him in court.

He might have thought I was blowing smoke, but I hope he realized afterwards, he should have selected a more suitable victim. Most folks don't know the fine print of the Pennsylvania statutes. I do.

My daughter graduated Drake Law School.
I’ll let her know about the big case, she’ll be rooting for you!

See post #5. I won it. Congratulations to your daughter for graduating there. Not Harvard, but under rated, IMO. Top two guys in my class (1983) ended up making seven figures a year. I was nowhere near that level, but I managed to make enough in my career to keep me in GTXs.

Thanks.
As a single parent the school was doable, money wise.
She has a nice life thanks to the school and the many connections from attending.
I’ll let her know you won. She will definitely enjoy it.

As an Asian raised in rural Pennsylvania, I have a reverse profiling issue when I order hard core traditional dishes at Chinese restaurants catering to international students at Penn State. I always have to request a fork.
I was sitting in a Chinese restaurant in Alabama listening to the wait staff converse in what I assumed was Chinese. It made me wonder is Asians from the south have a southern drawl and Asians from the north think they sound like hillbillies.

Am I OK?

Thanks.

When I was a student, I was able to pay for a year's tuition with the money I made driving a tractor trailer to the west coast during the summer. I paid for the first year by selling my first GTX. I graduated with $15,000 in debt, for living expenses, after my wife and I had our daughter while I was still in school. A pittance by today's standards. Tougher for today's graduates, but it sounds like she did okay. Good for you as a single parent.

They threw the book at a senior citizen who has pumped significant revenue into the local economy by attending the event. The vehicle defect was remedied in the parking lot. What do you think?

this is why I never go overboard in my support for law enforcement.......way too many ********....... I hope I never need one, I don't want any at or in my house....... I don't trust them

and it you live over an hour away, it's not worth the trip on court day; so many just plead guilty and take it in the ***.......... that's what they're banking on

As I said earlier, he screwed up by picking a retired attorney as his mark. After the judge threw the case out, he apologized to me for having to make the trip. I replied, hey I'm retired, got me out of my wife's hair for the day, and got a great breakfast at Fay's Country Kitchen, my favorite spot downtown, a few blocks from the Magistrate's office. Anyone who's still working, it's not cost effective to fight it.

I have attended the Chrysler Nationals every year since it started in 1991, most years with a vintage Mopar, never had a problem until this one. This would be a HUGE embarrassment for them if this were to be shown on the news. A light bulb, a wheelchair, older gentleman and a beautiful car that does nothing but bring in big money for the locals. Moving violation, my a**. Money grab, big time!! Think of the things people get away with at Sturgis, because of the money they bring into those towns and state.

Sadly your sentiments are valid, particularly the last. The job is WAAY different than it was many years ago. What you're getting on the job these days couldn't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting hired decades ago.

You're right!! In most cases if everyone with a ticket showed up there wouldn't be enough room in the building for all of them. I've seen this many times, don't show up, just pay and go on is their plan of attack.

I too am respectful to LEO. Wouldn’t want the thankless task. That said, just stay in the donut shop.

40 years ago I got pulled over by a Tulsa cop. I went thru the only traffic circle in Tulsa and he didn't like something I did. It was 11 PM or thereabouts. First time I ever got pulled over, so I was kinda nervous. He asked if he could sit in my car, a '67 LTD. I said sure. He then proceeded to tell me that when he was a younger cop that was his squad car, a '67 LTD. He went on about how the cars would do 140 MPH from the factory, and their shop mechanic made some mods and got it up to 160 or so. I didn't question his numbers, I was too busy sweating. He said "Man, this brings back memories."

He never did write me a ticket. To this day I think he just wanted to see the car.
Absolutely he did

To my chagrin, I saw the identical process at work during my four decades in the trucking industry. I was embarrassed with what I was putting behind the wheel during my final years in management. A big reason I spent the last 20 years on the truck was the low level of the competition. I beat them every day for the best loads.

Hard to believe, but 25 years ago, I had a local police captain talk to me about getting into truck driving, because he was getting fed up with the idiots he was getting as young officers.

I'm sorry that you had to go through that. According to my unofficial research, about 60% of police are Dick's.
The new breed of police don't know the law or the constitution and they are not there to "serve and protect".
I can't understand why they are able to harass people like you for a turn signal? Glad to hear you got it taken
care of.

When I was young and dumb I had my fair share of police interactions, I don’t trust them either. I don’t hate them, but I don’t want to have anything to do with them either…
